Caleb, the Tick Lover

We worked out in the yard on Monday cleaning up after Irene.  Caleb was a HUGE help and did a great job picking up sticks and branches and dumping them in our leaf pile.  He got tired toward the end and laid down in the grass for a little while.  No big deal...

I did the customary tick check when we came inside before I put him in the bath tub.  What we found were the teeniest little ticks you've ever seen.  It appears that Caleb laid down in a tick nest and got baby ticks all over him.  Needless to say, it was pretty traumatic for him (and me!) to have to have them pulled off.  When all was said and done, I pulled off 50+ ticks from all over his body.

Matt held him and sang songs while I worked.  At one  point, he stopped for a second and Caleb cried, "Keep singing, Daddy!  Keep singing!" through is tears.  He even tried to sing a few tearful songs himself.  It was so pitiful and it broke my heart to see him hurting.  He was absolutely miserable.

After a phone call to our pediatrician, he said to just watch Caleb carefully and check for redness or infection each day.  Hopefully, we can avoid needing the antibiotics.  Maybe the ticks were too young to do too much damage...??

Caleb and Matt did go do "man stuff" later that day and Caleb was rewarded for his bravery with dinner and milkshakes at Chic-fil-a.  I'm not sure it made up for the pain and trauma, but it helped a little.

Note to self:  bathe Caleb in Deep Woods Off before letting him step foot outside...
